Introduction
In today's digital world, where cyber security is of paramount importance, multi-factor authentication (MFA) has become an indispensable part of many organizations' security strategy. MFA means that access authorization to a digital resource or online account is verified by several independent characteristics (factors).
MFA therefore offers you an additional layer of security that goes beyond the traditional username/password combination.
What is multi-factor authentication (MFA)?
Multi-factor authentication is a security method that uses multiple methods to verify a user's identity. Rather than relying solely on a password, MFA requires users to provide at least two or more authentication factors to access a system or application.
Authentication factors can be divided into three categories:
1. Something you know (like a password or PIN)
2. Something you have (like a smart card or mobile device)
3. Something you are (like a fingerprint or facial recognition)
How does MFA work?
When a user attempts to access a system or application, they will be asked to provide multiple authentication factors. For example, this could be a password and a code sent to their cell phone. Only when all the factors provided have been successfully verified will the user be granted access.
Advantages of MFA:
- Increased security: MFA provides an additional layer of security that makes it more difficult to gain unauthorized access.
- Protection of sensitive data: MFA is particularly useful for protecting sensitive data and systems.
- Compliance: Many IT standards and regulations require the use of MFA.
Initial registration with MFA
As soon as we have activated the MFA for your account, you will see a QR code on your login screen instead of the input fields for your e-mail address and password.
Scan the QR code with an authentication app, e.g. Google Authenticator or Microsoft Authenticator, and follow the steps in the app.
The authentication app generates a unique code. Enter this code in the Alasco login window to link the authentication app to your Alasco login.
For future logins, you can decide whether you want to continue using the authentication app or the e-mail procedure.
Further logins via MFA
If you use MFA as the login procedure in your account, the login to Alasco consists of the following steps:
-
Initial login: As soon as you have successfully registered via the authentication app, as explained in the last point, you can log in to Alasco via MFA.
-
Login: Enter your e-mail address and password in the Alasco login screen.
-
Verification: The system will then ask you to confirm your identity.
-
Select method: Decide whether you want to confirm your identity either via the authentication app or via the e-mail procedure.
-
Authentication app: A unique code is generated in the authentication app, which must be entered in the Alasco login screen.
-
E-mail procedure: With this method, you will receive an e-mail from the system with a unique code that must be entered in the Alasco login screen.
-
Login: Confirm your entry to log in to your Alasco user account.
